Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University has the distinction of being the oldest university west of the Mississippi River. It is a private Jesuit university featuring several colleges, such as the College of Arts & Sciences, the John Cook School of Business, and the Saint Louis University School of Social Work. The Medical Center features a School of Medicine that dates back to 1891. It awarded the first MD degree west of the Mississippi in 1836. The university also has a campus in Madrid, Spain.
