In 1877, the American Baptist Home Mission Society established the Natchez Seminary in Natchez, Mississippi as a college for Mississippi’s black community. The school moved in 1882 to Jackson, Mississippi, and the name was changed in 1899 to Jackson College. The school continued to evolve, adding graduate programs, new colleges, and expanded curriculum. The school became a public institution and was renamed Jackson State College in 1956. Finally, in 1974, the school became Jackson State University.
Today, Jackson State University is a diverse, dynamic, technology-based institution, considered one of the best universities in Mississippi. It is located on a 245-acre campus in Jackson, with the oldest building – Ayer Hall – built in 1903. The Jackson State Tigers participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The football team holds 16 SWAC titles and famous football alumni include Walter Payton, Lem Barney, and Jackie Slater.
