Belhaven University - Jackson, MS

Founded in 1883, Belhaven University began as a women’s college by Dr. Lewis Fitzhugh. Fire destroyed the main building in 1895, and another fire broke out in 1910. After the second fire, the title to the college was donated to the Presbyterian Church, and the private, liberal arts school began a religious affiliation. In 2010, Belhaven College became Belhaven University.

Today, BU is still a private, Christian liberal arts university located in Jackson, Mississippi. The university enrolls roughly 3,000 students, including about 500 grad students. Belhaven University offers several bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, and is one of just 33 colleges accredited in all four major arts. It is also the nation’s only Christian university offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.

Belhaven University is located just south of the University of Mississippi Medical Center and just east of Millsaps College. To find an apartment in the Belhaven University area, look in north Jackson, along East Fortification Street or near Riverside Drive. The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, and the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium are all located in the BU area.
