The founding of Bradley University was a triumph over tragedy. Lydia Moss Bradley lost all six of her children and then her husband. Before his death, the couple had discussed how to create a memorial to their deceased children and planned to establish an orphanage. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Bradley decided to build a school instead. In 1896, Mrs. Bradley provided more than 17 acres and set up funds for two campus buildings, and classes at Bradley Polytechnic Institute were held for the first time in October 1897.
Mrs. Bradley would be honored to know that the school she set up became a full university in 1946. Today, Bradley University is a private, top-ranking institution organized into six schools and a Graduate School. The campus is located on 85 acres on Peoria’s west bluff, minutes from downtown.
Bradley University’s convenient location makes it accessible from anywhere in Peoria, but to find an apartment in the Bradley University area, look in West Peoria, along North Western Avenue. Bradley University is located between North Western Avenue and North University Street, with West Main Street as its northern border.
