The University of Athens (UGA) is located in Athens, Georgia about 60 miles from Atlanta. The university was founded in 1785 and was the first chartered state-supported university in the country. UGA contains 388 buildings across 615 acres and has one of the best research libraries in the nation.
Athens is the quintessential college town with walkable streets, sidewalk cafes, and funky shops. It is home of the Bulldogs and fans are located state-wide. During football season, Athens comes alive from tailgating at Sanford Stadium, the seventh largest stadium in the NCAA, to crowds at sports bars. Several buildings on the UGA campus are included in the walking tours as historic sites. The beautiful downtown is also a historic district, and 14 other neighborhoods are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
