University of Denver - Denver, CO
In its commitment to environmental conservation, the University of Denver has pledged to become a carbon-neutral institution by 2050. Of course, since its 125-acre campus is shaded by hundreds of trees – and in fact, the entire campus is designated as an arboretum – there’s a lot of beautiful environment to protect.
The university, also referred to as DU, already offsets 31 percent of campus energy use; the school is the largest wind-energy buyer among Colorado colleges and universities. The school uses vehicles that run on clean-burning compressed natural gas. Students at DU can minor in sustainability, and tailor the program to complement any major.
The university operates a free bike library that operates from two on-campus, bike-sharing kiosks. That, in addition to the unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation, helps explain why Men’s Fitness magazine ranked DU among the top 25 “fittest colleges in America.” Other rankings include placement among the nation’s top 100 universities by US News and World Report, tied at 82nd with American University, Auburn University and the University of Vermont.
The oldest and largest private university in the Rocky Mountain region, DU enrolls about 11,600 students. The Carnegie Foundation classifies DU as a doctoral/research University with “high research activity.”
Notable alumni include Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. Secretary of State; Andrew Rosenthal, editorial page editor, The New York Times; Michelle Kwan, figure-skating champion; Mary Cheney, political activist and daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney; David Adkins, the comedian known as Sinbad; Peter Coors, chairman, Molson Coors Brewing Company; Peter Morton, founder of the Hard Rock Cafe chain.
