In 1897, a small school was set up to educate future female teachers. The small school evolved over time to become San Diego State University, the oldest and largest university in the San Diego area. Some of the history is still found on campus, with several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These buildings include the Hardy Memorial Tower, a tower which contains the Fletcher Symphonic Carillon, a carillon with over 200 bells. It also includes the landmark Hepner Hall, a Mission-Revival style building that is the symbol of SDSU.
SDSU is a highly productive research university and is considered one of the best research universities in the country. It is also one of the most diverse — it ranks in the top 10 for diversity among its student body.
The SDSU Aztecs have a long history in sports, as well. The basketball team has won several tournaments, including four MWC tournaments. The football team is part of the Division I FBS. They play at Qualcomm Stadium, which is also home to the NFL San Diego Chargers.
