Wilkesboro, NC Apartments for Rent

Wilkesboro, the county seat of Wilkes County, is located along the Yadkin River about an hour and a half northeast of Charlotte and about an hour west of Winston-Salem. It is a beautiful community, complete with wooded hillsides, winding country lanes, and a charming historic downtown.

Downtown Wilkesboro features several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This pedestrian-friendly town hub includes walking tours of the area. Some of the historic sites include the Old Wilkes County Courthouse, built in 1902, and the Finley Law Office, built in the late 19th century. Across from the law office is the Tory Oak Site. This site protects a 250-year-old oak tree that was used during the Revolution to hang Tories – enemies of the American Revolution.

Other sites include the Robert Cleveland House (built in the 1770s), the Old Wilkes Jail (built in 1860), the Carl Lowe House (built in 1899), and the Brown-Cowles House (dating to 1830).

Rent a Wilkesboro apartment now and have a front-row seat to Merelfest, one of the largest music festivals in the country. Held on the Wilkes Community College campus, the event includes bluegrass, folk, jazz, Cajun, acoustic, blues and more. In addition, the festival includes crafts, activities, food, shopping, and more. Many who attend the festival stay at the annual campground sponsored by the Wilkesboro Volunteer Fire Department, which has become an extension of the festival with many late-night jam sessions and a shuttle to MerleFest.

Just a short drive east of the Cherokee National Forest, Wilkesboro is a great town for those who enjoy outdoor activities. With its stunning landscape, mountain biking is very popular, and the trails at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir are some of the best in the region. In addition to mountain biking, this large park is also popular for hiking, boating, fishing, and camping.
