Lancaster County, Nebraska
The county of Lancaster, located in Nebraska, was founded in 1859. Lancaster is comprised of three cities: Hickman, Waverly and Lincoln. Lincoln – once named Lancaster, also – is Lancaster’s county seat, and also the capital of Nebraska. Lancaster was renamed Lincoln after President Abraham Lincoln; it became the state capital in 1867.
Downtown Lincoln is host to the historic Haymarket District, located between 7th and 9th Streets. This trendy restoration neighborhood features art galleries, restaurants, and unique shops and antiques housed in turn-of-the-century buildings in what used to be a warehouse and farmers’ market section of the city. The area is open year round; warmer months offer open-air farmers markets, generally May through October.
This historic district began to take shape in 1985, when Haymarket businesses and property owners, along with community leaders, formed the Lincoln Haymarket Development Corporation as a non-profit in order to apply for participation in the National Main Street Program. This revitalization program, administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, selected Haymarket as one of nine sites in the nation to qualify as a Main Street Program site. From there, the group developed a broad-based revitalization plan.
Today, visitors to Haymarket District can enjoy the aromas from its many restaurants, admire the restored architecture and artwork of the old warehouse district, sit and sip at a sidewalk café and find a priceless treasure at one the area’s unique shops.
The Lied Center for Performing Arts offers something for everyone as it presents an array of dance, music, theatre, comedy, family and Broadway performances. Created by and for the people of Nebraska, the center opened in 1990. The Lied also does very important work statewide in arts education for students in kindergarten through college, and offers professional development opportunities for teachers.
Lancaster County covers a total area of 847 square miles. Its population number just under 300,000 residents. Lancaster is a settled, family-oriented area; out of its almost 100,000 households almost one-third had children under the age of 18, and almost half were married couples living together.
