Known as the “Heart and Soul of Mississippi,” Greenville is a historic, vibrant city located on the Mississippi River along Lake Ferguson. Founded in 1824, Greenville is named for General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero and George Washington’s most dependable officer. He was best known for his successful command of the Southern Campaign, in which he drove the British from the Carolinas.
Greenville is famous for its blues and jazz scene and was home to a historic strip of blues clubs called Nelson Street. Today, many of the city’s nightclubs and restaurants are located on Walnut Street. Greenville is filled with things to do, from museums to outdoor activities to shopping. Don’t miss the Hot Tamale Trail, a spicy-food extravaganza, and the eateries that dot the riverfront, and the Mississippi Blues Trail, a trail that extends from the border of Louisiana to Memphis, Tennessee.
