Macalester – Groveland Neighborhood

The historic Macalester-Groveland communities of St. Paul, MN, otherwise known simply as “Mac Groveland,” are located about five miles from both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. The communities are located in west central St. Paul and bordered on the west by the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, on the east by the Short Line Railroad, on the north by Summit Avenue, and on the south by Randolph Avenue.

The Mac Groveland area is primarily residential with some commercial properties along the main streets of Grand Avenue and St. Clair Avenue. Some homes date back to the late 1800s, but the major housing boom occurred from 1915 through the late 1920s. Almost all available land was developed. Housing styles today reflect these eras of prairie and craftsman-style homes. Several Spanish and mission revival bungalows were built in the mid-1920s.

Public schools attended include Groveland Park Elementary, Randolph Heights Elementary, and Ramsey Junior High. There are well-known higher education institutions located here, such as Macalester College, located at Snelling and Summit Avenues — a private, coeducational, liberal arts college. This school is well known for its diverse enrollment and has one of the highest percentages of foreign students in the United States. The University of St. Thomas, located where Summit Avenue meets the Mississippi River, is a private, Catholic, coeducational, liberal arts college founded in 1885 as a Catholic seminary; it is Minnesota’s largest private college.

There are countless parks nearby. Just to the south of Macalester-Groveland is the large Highland Park, featuring a disc golf course, 10 tennis courts, picnicking areas, football and baseball fields, horseshoe pits, miles of jogging and biking trails, an aquatic center, a clubhouse, and stadium seating for nearly 3,000 people. This park is popular for organized sports for all ages, as well as for biking, kite flying, or picnicking on a warm Minnesota Saturday afternoon.
