The Charleston Naval Weapons Station covers 17,000 acres on Joint Base Charleston. Charleston Air Force Base is also located on the Joint Base. The Naval Weapons Station was commissioned in 1941 as a collection and distribution point for ammunition during WW II. Today, the base includes a training center, as well as serving as an Army logistics hub, a maintenance and storage facility, and a surface port.
