The sixth-largest Air Force installation, Kirtland Air Force Base, has been in use since 1942. It shares runways with Albuquerque International Sunport. The joint civilian-military airport is located about three miles southeast of downtown Albuquerque. The Air Force Materiel Command’s Nuclear Weapons Center is located at Kirtland and includes the 377th Air Base Wing and the 498th Armament Systems Wing.
