Built in 1931, Barksdale Air Force Base is home to the oldest Bomb Wing in the Air Force, the 2d Bomb Wing. The base is named for WWI aviator Lt. Eugene Hoy Barksdale. In addition to the 2d Bomb Wing, other units assigned to Barksdale include the Air Force Global Strike Command, the Eight Air Force Headquarters, and the 26th Operational Weather Squadron.
While the base is closed to the public, it is home to the Eighth Air Force Museum, which does allow visitors to tour the museum. The museum includes historical aviation artifacts, a large collection of military aircraft, and a gift shop.
