With its park-like setting along the Mississippi River, historic Fort Leavenworth is located just north of Leavenworth, a city about 25 miles northwest of Kansas City. Fort Leavenworth, the oldest continuously-active military reservation west of the Mississippi, was built in 1827. The army post includes the US Army Combined Arms Center, the Command and General Staff College, and the 705th Military Police Battalion garrisons.
Because of its history, Fort Leavenworth includes several historic locations and attractions, including the Frontier Army Museum, which details the history of the army west of the Mississippi River from 1804 to 1917. The museum, which is free, is open to the public. Visitors can also see the Buffalo Soldier Monument and the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, which was established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Self-guided tours of Fort Leavenworth’s attractions are also available.
