Since the 1800s, the US has had an interest in Pearl Harbor. The shipyard was officially created in 1908 and played a role in every major war since, including the event that led to the US becoming involved in World War II – the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Today, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is Hawaii’s regional maintenance center for the US Navy, the only maintenance facility for submarines in the Middle Pacific. Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility is the state’s largest industrial employer with about 4,500 civilian employees and roughly 500 military personnel.
