Fort Huachuca, AZ

Fort Huachuca was annexed by the city of Sierra Vista in 1971 and the fort was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Fort Huachuca, which was established in 1877, is located 15 miles north of the border with Mexico in southeast Arizona. For 20 years starting in 1913, Fort Huachuca was the base for the 10th Cavalry Regiment, better known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.”

Today, Fort Huachuca is home to the US Army Intelligence Center and the NETCOM/9th Signal Command. The fort is also home to two museums, the Ft. Huachuca Museum and the Army Intelligence Museum. Fort Huachuca is located in the northwestern section of Sierra Vista.

Surrounded by mountains that include the Huachuca, the Dragoon, the Mustang, the Whetstone, and the Mule, Sierra Vista is a picturesque city along the San Pedro River. The city grew around the fort, beginning with a saloon that opened in 1892. A post office and a general store soon followed, but the city wasn’t incorporated until 1956. Fort Huachuca is one of the area’s largest employers.

The entire city of Sierra Vista is ideal for apartments near Fort Huachuca, but especially along Golf Links Road, South Buffalo Soldier Trail, and Fry Boulevard.
