The name Versailles may not immediately evoke thoughts of Kentucky horse country, but this section of central Kentucky is as unique as its name. In 1792, the city was named by Major Marquis Calmes after Versailles, France to honor family friend General Lafayette. Versailles is the county seat of Woodford County and is located about 13 miles west of downtown Lexington and around 15 miles southeast of Frankfort.
Horse farms dot the landscape, with thoroughbred farms such as Fallbrook Farm, Ashview farm, Buck Pond Farm, Rose Hill Farm, Stonewall Farm, and Richland Hills Farm all located in Versailles. Some of the most famous horse farms in the Bluegrass Region are located in Versailles.
