Frisbie Park Neighborhood

Frisbie Park is located in the western part of Des Moines, in zip code 50312. It is located just east of Grand Avenue and just south of Vine Street. The boundaries are South 1st Street to the west, Railroad Avenue and Ashworth Park to the south, just south of Vine Street to the north, and just west of Ashworth Park to the east. It is just a short distance south of Interstate 235, and Grand Avenue spans the river to East Village and to the Capitol.

Homes in the area are a mix of newer and older structures, many of which date back to just after World War II. Most of these properties are one-story residences, and ranch or ramblers represent the predominant architectural style of the buildings in this area. Because the area is surrounded by wooded parkland, the neighborhood is filled with mature trees, giving this community a relaxed and almost suburban-like feeling, though it’s a short distance from the state’s capitol building.

Ashworth Park is located east of 45th Street and south of Grand. It has a parking area, an open area shelter with picnic tables, a play ground, the Ashworth Memorial Swimming Pool, tennis and basketball courts, and the Bill Riley Recreational Trail.

Greenwood Park is just a short distance from Ashworth Park. It extends from 45th Street to 48th Street south of Grand Avenue. Greenwood Park is home to the Sylvan Theater, the Clair and Miles Mills Rose Garden, the Mary Miss Greenwood outdoor classroom at the pond and the Des Moines Art Center.

The area about four blocks west of Frisbie Park is filled with all sorts of restaurants, and the Langniappe Coffee and Wine Bar is located just above a local gift and jewelry shop. Valley West Mall is located on Valley West Drive, just three miles from the Frisbie Park area.
