Chicago at a Glance
Jefferson Park Neighborhood
“Transportation, affordability, safety” were the three words used by Web Behrens, writer for the Chicago Tribune, to describe Jefferson Park, a cozy, primarily middle-class neighborhood on Chicago’s northwest side. Transportation is certainly first on the list of this neighborhood’s attributes.
Near the Interstate Highways 90/94 split, residents enjoy an easy commute downtown or to the northern suburbs. The neighborhood is also a key transportation hub, where the CTA’s Blue Line ‘L’ trains, traveling from the Loop to O’Hare, meet suburban Metra trains. CTA buses depart here as well.
Although suburban, the neighborhood offers lots to do. Jefferson Park or “Jeff Park” as it is called by residents, boasts one of the largest Polish-American communities in Chicago, and is home to a number of Polish restaurants. The Copernicus Foundation, a cultural institution named for the Polish scholar who popularized the idea that the sun, not Earth, is the center of the universe, sponsors the annual Taste of Polonia, a food, craft and polka fest held Labor Day weekend. The festival has attracted prominent political figures including President George H. Bush, Vice-President Dick Cheney and Tipper Gore.
The Gift Theatre, the area’s only arts organization, offers regular productions said to rival many more established companies. The most popular local gathering spot is the Gale Street Inn restaurant and tavern. A mainstay since 1963, the inn is well-known for its baby-back ribs.
The area park is a seven-acre green space with two ball fields, a playground, pool and tennis and a century-old farm house that was once part of the Esdohr family farm.
Schools include several private Catholic and Lutheran institutions, as well as the highly-regarded Beaubien public school, which enrolls more than 1,000 children from its own district and from a magnet gifted program.
