Ada County, Idaho
Between the Boise National Forest and the Boise River in southwestern Idaho, Ada County is densely populated – more than one-fourth of the entire population of Idaho resides in Ada County. The county was formed in 1864 and is named for the daughter of H.C. Riggs, the co-founder of Boise.
The county seat, state capital, and largest city in Ada County is Boise. Downtown Boise is very cosmopolitan and contains many high-rise buildings, smaller businesses, shops, restaurants, and sidewalk cafes. Several companies are headquartered in Boise, such as Albertsons, WinCo Foods, and Micron Technology. Boise is also home to several colleges and universities, including Boise State University, the new Concordia University School of Law, and Boise Bible College.
Boise is a culturally rich city. It is home to the Gene Harris Jazz Festival, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, the Boise Contemporary Theater, the Boise Art Museum, and the Boise Centre on the Grove. The city is home to a large Basque community and a large festival is held every five years. Because of its wealth of fine arts, its pedestrian-friendly downtown, its attractiveness to business and entrepreneurs, and its security, Boise is an award-winning city and is listed on several “best of” lists.
Other cities in Ada County include Star, Kuna, Eagle, Meridian, and Garden City. There are 155 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Among these are the Ada Theater, the Boise Historic District, the Capitol District, and Hyde Park Historic District, all of which are located in Boise.
