Southwest Neighborhood

Southwest Orlando, Florida is located just south of the Florida Turnpike, extending toward I-4. This popular area includes Windemere and portions of Lake Buena Vista. Lake Apopka is to the north of the neighborhood. There are several popular smaller neighborhoods contained in Southwest Orlando, including Bay Hill and Dr. Phillips.

Orlando boasts over 2,000 lakes as well as 168 golf courses, of which there are two in the Bay Hill area. Bay Hill’s golf course sits at its northern edge, famous for being the home of the annual Arnold Palmer Invitational. A premiere event for the PGA Tour, some of golf’s biggest names come to Bay Hill to play each year. Some of the past winners in the last 30 years include golfing legends Payne Stewart, Phil Mikelson, and Tiger Woods.

The Isleworth Golf and Country Club is minutes from Bay Hill. With scenic greens and a lake view, the course has been touted as the toughest and longest course in Florida. The club also features state-of-the-art tennis and fitness facilities. There is a full range of youth programs, including Camp Isleworth, a summer program combining sports, environmental education, and the arts.

One of the most prominent neighborhoods in Orlando is the community of Dr. Phillips. In the early twentieth century, the Sand Lake area was the site of Dr. Phillip Phillip’s citrus empire. Dr. Phillips planned the community around his citrus groves. This area became the first planned community in Central Florida. Today, the Dr. Phillips neighborhood boasts seven schools, a large community park, and multiple local businesses.

Located in Orange County’s 32836 zip code, Dr. Phillips is bordered by South Apopka Vineland Road on its western edge. It includes the lake areas of Lake Marshal, Spring Lake, Little Sand Lake, and Big Sand Lake. It is minutes from Interstate 4 and two major Orlando attractions: Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Sea World.

The Dr. Phillips Community Park is on the south side of the neighborhood, an 80-acre site that opened in 2007. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the parks facilities for soccer, basketball, and baseball. It also has a large children’s playground with splash area and trails for hiking. There is a dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs.

Southwest Orlando is near several shopping areas, including the Lake Buena Vista Factory Outlet Stores. Closer to home is the Marketplace at Dr. Phillips, a shopping center with national retail stores, groceries, and dining options. About a half-mile farther along West Sand Lake Road are the shops at Phillips Crossing and the Bay Hill Plaza. The Marketplace at Dr. Phillips complex offers dining options and a place to shop for groceries. The Festival Bay Mall at International Drive has dozens of stores as well as the Vans Skatepark and the glow-in-the-dark mini-golf course, The Putting Edge. Dr. Phillips is less than fifteen minutes from Orlando’s Mall at Millennia.
