East Whittier City is an area in the historic city of Whittier, one of the oldest communities in Los Angeles County. Located 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, East Whittier is a quiet suburb that is ideally located for commuters. Whittier Boulevard is the major thoroughfare through East Whittier. To the south of the boulevard are neighborhoods of well-kept mid-century ranch homes. To the north of the boulevard are the Whittier Hills and the Friendly Hills Country Club. The homes in the Friendly Hills area consist of larger estates and mansions with expansive yards and breathtaking views of downtown Los Angeles to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the south.
Whittier is a very green city, with mature trees and abundant landscaping. There are several neighborhood parks in East Whittier, including Michigan Park, Murphy Ranch Park, Leffingwell Ranch Park and Parnell Park. In the northern part of the Whittier Hills is Arroyo Pescadero, a two-acre wilderness park with an interpretive hiking trail. For more adventuresome hikers there are many acres of rugged undeveloped land in the hills surrounding Arroyo Pescadero.
A wide variety of stores and businesses can be found along Whittier Boulevard. There are two major shopping centers in East Whittier City – Whittwood Town Center and The Quad. Additional shopping centers are located nearby in the adjacent cities of La Habra and La Puente.
The historic area of Whittier known as Uptown is located to the west. Sites of interest in Uptown Whittier include the hacienda of Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California, and the law office of former president Richard M. Nixon. Whittier College, a small liberal arts college established in 1896, is also located in the Uptown area. Because of its proximity to Hollywood and the large number of older historic homes, Whittier has been used as a location for dozens of movies and televisions shows.
