Riviera Neighborhood

The Esplanade is a popular street in Redondo Beach’s Riviera. It doesn’t have any markets, shopping malls, or attractions – unless one considers its proximity to the Redondo Beach Pier in neighboring King Harbor. It’s a residential street, but not an ordinary one.

On a mile-long stretch, there are no homes or structures obscuring the view of the entire Santa Monica Bay. Here, on its sidewalks, people often gather at sunset to watch the sun sink below the distant horizon.

Riviera is a small, compact neighborhood. It’s bound by Palos Verdes Boulevard to the southeast, Pacific Coast Highway to the northeast, Torrance’s Hollywood Riviera to the South, Torrance Boulevard to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Despite its size, Riviera is the vibrant center of Redondo. Surfers flock here to catch some of the best waves in Southern California. Party-goers head for Catalina Avenue and Avenue I to frequent the numerous bars. Would-be poets read their work at places such as Coffee Cartel on Catalina Avenue.

Although Riviera is in Redondo Beach, many students living south of Avenue I go to South Torrance High School rather than Redondo Union High School. Many are given this choice. Still, South Torrance High surf team uses Riviera’s beach for home tournaments.

Riviera goes by several names. South Bay locals refer to it as either Hollywood Riviera or Riviera Village. Riviera Village actually refers to the shopping sector between Palos Verdes Boulevard, Catalina Avenue, and Avenue I. Hollywood Riviera was its original name. Now, it’s the name of a Torrance community.

Another feature of Riviera is what exists near The Esplanade. The Stand is a twenty-mile bike route. Many use this path to travel to reach other beach communities. The path starts in Riviera and ends in Santa Monica.
