Snohomish County, Washington

Miles of shoreline along Puget Sound give way to rolling hills and forests, leading toward the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the North Cascade Mountains. Snohomish County’s ruggedly beautiful, diverse landscape is one of the reasons it is the fastest-growing county in Washington. Nearly 70 percent of the county is forested, and the vast wilderness is tempered by flourishing cities. It is located north of Seattle and contains some of the most stunning landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The highest point in the county is Glacier Peak, an isolated volcano in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Extreme adventurers can hike to the mountain, but it is very challenging and there are no access roads leading to the base of the mountain.

Everett is the largest city and the county seat. It is a bustling, award-winning city that contains several important locations, including a Boeing assembly plant, one of the largest buildings in the world; the Port of Everett, a major international shipping port; and Naval Station Everett, a modern navy station that opened in 1992. Colleges and universities in Everett include Everett Community College, the University of North Puget Sound, and Western Washington University-Everett Center.

Granite Falls, a city named for a fierce waterfall tumbling down carved rock from the Stillaguamish River, is a popular tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It is home to two rivers and is considered the “Gateway to the Mountain Loop.” It is a popular location for hiking, camping, fishing, and skiing. The city holds several annual events, including art shows and car shows in the summer, Railroad Days and a Rhythm & Blues Bash in the fall, and Winterfest in December.
