Webb County, Texas
Webb County, Texas sprawls across an area of 3,376 square miles, 19 square miles of which is water. The official population county is 250,304.
Webb County was created in 1848 and named after James Webb, who held several high offices within the Republic of Texas. Webb County is bordered by the Rio Grande River. There are three cities in Webb County: El Cenizo, Rio Bravo and Laredo, its county seat, founded in 1755.
Ranching has been predominant throughout Laredo’s history. As early as 1757, 11 families owned 100 head of cattle, 125 mules, 712 horses, and 9,089 sheep and goats, according to a Spanish inspection report. One of the largest Spanish outfits was Dolores, owned by José Vásquez Borrego, which kept more than 9,000 animals on a 29,000-acre ranch.
Laredo became a major thoroughfare for trade between the United States and Mexico, and also became a destination city for thousands of immigrants from Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Scandinavia and all parts of the United States, who came seeking employment and opportunity. The city’s population of 3,512 in 1880 grew to 11,319 in 1890.
Coal was another industry here, as well; coal deposits located 27 miles upriver were mined as early as 1873. By 1900, trains carried 23,000,000 pounds of coal from Webb County mines to Laredo.
Agriculture was practiced on a large scale, as well; in particular, onions. As the 1917 Souvenir Album of Laredo boasted, “The Laredo area is foremost in the world in the production of Bermuda onions.”
The rich history of Webb County is preserved in its museums. The Republic of the Rio Grande Museum is housed in one of Laredo’s oldest structures in downtown Laredo. The museum is a Mexican vernacular structure, and is representative of the grand houses that populated the San Agustín District in the early 20th century. Built in 1830, it once served as the capitol of the Republic of the Río Grande. The building is a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark and a Contributing Structure to the San Agustín National Register District. The museum is one of the most-visited historic landmarks in the city.
There are three school districts that serve Webb County: Laredo Independent School District, United Independent School District and Webb Consolidated Independent School District.
