Cameron County, Texas

Located in the southernmost tip of Texas bordering Mexico, Cameron County has an amazing stretch of beaches along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. This includes South Padre Island, a narrow island off the coast. At the southernmost tip of the island, Isla Blanca Park contains pristine, white beaches. It is a popular area for surfing, sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and RV camping.

Brownsville, the county seat, is located along the iconic Rio Grande, just north of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. As home to the Port of Brownsville, this area is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. It is also a major manufacturing hub and its economy is based on international trade, specifically with Mexico. It is one of the least expensive places to live – and with the beautiful beaches and coastal atmosphere, the combination is a huge draw for many incoming residents. The area also has a large student population – the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) is located here.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Point Isabel Lighthouse located in Port Isabel is an 82-foot-high tower built in 1852 and played a role during the Civil War, when soldiers from both sides used the lighthouse as a lookout tower. Of the 16 lighthouses along the Texas coast, the Point Isabel Lighthouse is the only one open to the public.

National protected areas in Cameron County include the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site and parts of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

Other cities in Cameron County include Rio Hondo, San Benito, Harlingen, La Feria, Los Fresnos, and Palm Valley. Towns include Rancho Viejo, Santa Rosa, South Padre Island, Bayview, Combes, and Los Indios.
