Spartanburg County, South Carolina

Today’s surveyors must be very thankful for modern technology. Spartanburg County, located in South Carolina, was once made a part of North Carolina by mistake; it was incorporated into Tryon County, North Carolina in 1768 because of a survey error. Nevertheless, Spartanburg County helped play an important early role in the American Revolution as part of historic but now-defunct Tryon County.

Following the Battle of Lexington in Massachusetts, 49 Tryon county residents issued the Tryon Resolves, among the earliest declarations calling for redress of wrongs inflicted by the Crown. The document was signed in 1775, predating the US Declaration of Independence by almost 11 months. Many of the signers of the Resolves later formed the Tryon County Militia as part of the American resistance.

Spartanburg County, with the city of Spartanburg as its county seat, comprises the Spartanburg metropolitan area. Adjacent counties are Rutherford to the north, Cherokee to the east, Union to the southeast, Laurens to the south, Greenville to the west and Polk County, North Carolina to the northwest. The county has a total area of 819 square miles, eight square miles of which is water.

The county is not all ancient history; although its oldest home dates from 1885, homes in the trendy Hampton Heights historic district date mostly from the 1900s to the 1930s. It is the oldest residential neighborhood in the city and one of the closest to Morgan Square, the historical center of Spartanburg.

Although the neighborhood, like much of the country, suffered from economic decline and neglect during the 1960s and 1970s, today it is a vibrant area undergoing restoration and improvement. Architectural styles in the neighborhood include Queen Anne, Dutch Colonial, Arts and Crafts and Colonial Revival.

After a campaign by several neighborhood activists, the neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. In 1998, the neighborhood was listed as a local historic district; in that same year, the Preservation Trust of Spartanburg was established to increase home ownership in Hampton Heights and promote its preservation.

The population of Spartanburg County is just under 235,000. The racial makeup of the county is 75 percent white, 21 percent black and the remainder from other races. The median income for a household in the county is $37,579.
