Horry County, located along South Carolina’s northern coast, was founded in 1801 and named for Revolutionary War Hero, Peter Horry. A planter of French Huguenot descent, Peter Horry (O-REE’) was born in South Carolina in 1747, became a lieutenant colonel in the Revolution, served as brigadier general in the South Carolina Militia under Brigadier General Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion, and went on to represent Prince George and All Saints parishes in the South Carolina House and Senate. He died in 1815 and is buried at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbia, SC.
Horry is one of South Carolinas fastest-growing counties. The most recent census recorded the county’s population at 269,291. The county seat is Conway. The county shares with Georgetown County an arc-shaped strip of sandy beach and barrier islands which stretches from the North Carolina border down to Georgetown.
Called the Grand Strand, this area is a major tourist destination and home to a retirement community. In addition to 60 miles of beaches, this area has an almost unbelievable number of entertainment attractions, golf courses, and restaurants. The heart of the Grand Strand is Myrtle Beach, the county’s largest city; Myrtle Beach is fast becoming a metropolitan area.
Horry County covers a total area of 1,255 square miles; 121 square miles of its area is water. Horry County is bounded by North Carolina counties Columbus and Brunswick to the east and northeast; Robeson County, North Carolina to the northwest; Georgetown County, South Carolina to the southwest; Marion County, South Carolina to the west and Dillon County, South Carolina to the northwest.
The largest percentage of residents here are in the 25 to 44 age group. For men seeking a wife, Horry County is a good place to look; for every 100 females age 18 and over, there were only 94.10 males. The median income for a household in the county was $42,515 and the median income for a family was $42,676.
