Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Green hills dotted with farms line quiet, winding roads where a horse-drawn buggy rolls slowly past. No, it isn’t a scene from the 1800s but modern-day Lancaster County. Founded in 1729, Lancaster County was a haven for Amish settlers seeking religious freedom. In this unique county, the modern world hums alongside centuries-old traditions and lifestyles. The county is in the southeastern section of Pennsylvania and the county seat is the city of Lancaster.

Founded in 1730, the city of Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities in the nation. Famous Lancaster residents include James Buchanan and Thaddeus Stevens. Lancaster contains some beautiful landmarks and historic sites, including the Central Market – the oldest farmers market in the US. Lancaster County Prison, still in active use, was originally built in 1737. The newest building was constructed in 1851 and resembles a medieval castle. The Fulton Opera House is a National Historic Landmark built in 1852. It is one of the oldest continually-operating theaters in the country.

In a city as old as Lancaster, there are bound to be a few ghost stories. One location that’s rumored to be haunted is the Rock Ford Plantation. The plantation was built in 1794 by Edward Hand, who was Adjutant General to George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The house is said to be haunted by General Hand’s son, who committed suicide in the house in the early 1800s.

A county filled with quaint bed and breakfasts, elegant covered bridges, amazing historic sites, and lively night clubs and theaters, Lancaster County has something for everyone. Recreation opportunities include rafting, skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, kayaking, biking, hiking, and camping.
