Bucks County, Pennsylvania

In 1682, William Penn named Bucks County after his family home in England, Buckinghamshire. Walking down some streets in this county is like taking a stroll through time back to the Colonial period, when settlers were just beginning to feel the pangs of revolution. The sites are national treasures and include such places as the Pearl S. Buck House, Mercer Museum, and Washington Crossing Historic Park.

Washington Crossing Historic Park is the site where George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River in an effort to turn the tide of the Revolution and defeat the Hessian army. Sites within the park include the Thompson-Neely House, a national landmark home that was used to care for sick and wounded soldiers. The central part of the house was built around 1740. Bowman’s Hill Tower is a 125-foot commemorative tower that offers amazing views of the Delaware River. A graveyard of soldiers who died during the winter encampment of 1776 is also located in the park.

In all, there are 157 National Historic Places in Bucks County. Historic Fallsington is a 300-year-old village with buildings that date back to the 1700s. The Moland House was built around 1750 and served as the headquarters for George Washington for a year in 1777. Pennsbury Manor is the home of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania and the state’s first governor.

Located in the Delaware Valley, Bucks County is a heavily-populated and wealthy county. The county seat is Doylestown, a borough that began in 1745 when a tavern was built by William Doyle, leading to the growth of a small village. It is the home of Nobel-prize winning author Pearl S. Buck, playwright Oscar Hammerstein, and Margaret Mead.

Other boroughs to consider when looking for an apartment in Bucks County include Dublin, Quakertown, New Hope, Langhorne, Bristol, and Morrisville. Townships include Durham, Buckingham, Bedminster, Falls, Milford, Warwick, and Solebury.
