In the northeastern corner of Ohio on the western banks of Lake Erie and along the Maumee River, Lucas County is a water-oriented city. Residents enjoy all types of outdoor activities, including fishing, camping, boating, and hiking.
Maumee Bay State Park features 1,336 acres of fun. It is a beautiful park on Lake Erie and includes a golf course, campsites, cottages, and a lodge. A boardwalk leads visitors through swamp and marsh wetlands, and nine miles of trails are perfect for walking, biking, and jogging. In the summer, two sandy beaches are perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and a 32-slip marina allows for boating. Canoeing and sailing are also popular. The park also includes an 18-hole golf course, a nature center, an amphitheater, and winter activities such as cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice skating.
In addition to outdoor recreation, Lucas County also offers fine arts in the form of the Toledo Museum of Art, the Collingwood Arts Center, the Stranahan Theater, the Toledo Opera, and the historic Valentine Theatre. Other attractions include the Toledo Zoo, the R.A. Stranahan Arboretum, the Toledo Botanical Garden, and the Imagination Station.
With an economy gaining strength through the development of solar energy, Toledo has shed its “rust belt” identity and has begun to offer green jobs with companies such as First solar and Xunlight.
A highly educated population results from the colleges and universities in the area. The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Mercy College, Lourdes College, Davis College and Stautzenberger College are all located in Lucas County.
