Cincinnati at a Glance
Hyde Park Neighborhood
Just the name, “Hyde Park,” brings forth images of majestic, turn-of-the-century homes, romantic gas lamps, stained-glass windows, porches, high ceilings and lush parks. The Hyde Park neighborhood on the east side of Cincinnati, Ohio, lives up to those images as one of the city’s oldest and most prestigious neighborhoods. Established in 1892 by prominent businessmen who wanted to create a community for the city’s wealthy, the area was named Hyde Park after New York’s fashionable neighborhood of the same name.
The heart of the community is Hyde Park Square, an area measuring approximately two blocks bounded by Edwards Road on the west and Michigan Avenue on the east. The square, with the park in the center, is surrounded by retail shops and restaurants. Graeter’s Ice Cream parlor, located on Hyde Park Square, is the oldest surviving ice cream manufacturer– 125 years old – in America and the only one left that still makes ice cream using the “French pot” method.
The Hyde Park neighborhood suffers very few traffic jams, offers plenty of space for its 14,000 residents to enjoy dog-walking and jogging, and is consistently a good investment for homeowners.
Though many consider Hyde Park to be one of the most desirable, prestigious and safe neighborhoods to live in the city, home prices actually range from multi-million-dollar river-view estates to mid-range family homes and starter homes, as well as a wide variety of home and apartment rental opportunities. Contemporary condominium homes are located one block east of Hyde Park Square including the Regency, The Madison House, Michigan Terrace and Gloucester Square.
Hyde Park Square hosts a number of events including the annual Hyde Park Art Show the first Sunday in October, the Hyde Park Farmers Market every Sunday from June through September, the annual Hyde Park Blast which features children’s and adult running races, a nationally-ranked cycling race, a spectacular street party in June and an annual Hyde Park Square Sidewalk Sale.
Schools in the Hyde Park neighborhood include the Summit Country Day School; St. Mary School; Withrow High School and Kilgour School, a Cincinnati public school with a rating of “Academic Excellent with Distinction.”
