Butler County, Ohio

During the late 1700s, a fort was built in the newly-acquired Ohio Territory. Fort Hamilton was named for Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of Treasury under George Washington. The original fort was built by General Arthur St. Clair. Major General Richard Butler was sent to Fort Hamilton to serve as second-in-command during an expedition by St. Clair, where an ambush led by Chief Little Turtle killed nearly 700 people. Known as the Battle of Wabash, it was the worst defeat the US Army suffered against the Indians. General “Mad” Anthony Wayne took over for the defeated St. Claire and enlarged the fort in 1792. William Henry Harrison, the ninth US President, served as a young soldier at the fort.

Today, the location of this fascinating history is Butler County, Ohio. The county, located north of Cincinnati, is considered part of the Cincinnati metro area. It is named for the general who assisted St. Claire. The city of Hamilton, the county seat, is the site of the original fort. St. Clair and Wayne are townships named for the other generals.

Proud of its long and colorful history, Butler County erected the largest statue in the country of Alexander Hamilton near Journal Square. Hamilton, known as the “City of Sculpture,” is home to many other works of art, such as those located at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park. The Miami River flows through Hamilton and several parks are located along the banks, including Riverside Natural Area. This area is just south of Miami University-Hamilton Campus.

Other communities in Butler County include Millville, Monroe, New Miami, Somerville, Fairfield, College Corner, Olde West Chester, Bethany, Okeana, Indian Springs, and Bethany.
