Washington and Lee University - Lexington, VA
Washington and Lee University, founded in 1749, was named for George Washington, who gave a large endowment to the college in 1796 when it was called Liberty Hall Academy, and Robert E. Lee, who was once the university’s president. W&L is a private liberal arts university in Lexington with three areas of study: the School of Law, the College, and the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics.
The school began as Augusta Academy in 1749, then, when Congress declared independence in 1776, the university was renamed Liberty Hall in honor of the American Revolution. After Washington’s endowment, the trustees changed the name again to Washington Academy. After Robert E. Lee served as president of the college after the Civil War until his death in 1870, his name was added to Washington’s.
The W&L campus is a National Historic Landmark. It is located on 325 acres in downtown Lexington, just north of Main Street. If you want an apartment in the Washington and Lee University area, both East Lexington and West Lexington are great locations.
