College of William and Mary - Williamsburg, VA

To judge a university, it’s always good to read student reviews. Try this one:

“It was my great good fortune, and what probably fixed the destinies of my life, that Dr. William Small of Scotland was then professor of mathematics [at the College of William & Mary], a man profound in most of the useful branches of science, with a happy talent of communications, correct and gentlemanly manners, and an enlarged and liberal mind.” Thomas Jefferson, Class of 1762

That’s right, Thomas Jefferson was an alumni of the College of William and Mary, also referred to as W&M. The school is the alma mater of two other American presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as a laundry list of American patriots including signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Chartered on February 8, 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II of England and located in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, W&M is literally surrounded by history. The school is the second-oldest college in America. Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s first academic Greek society, was founded here in 1776, as was the nation’s first Honor Code for students. The establishment of graduate programs in 1779 make the school one of the first universities in the US.

The campus rests on 1,200 scenic acres surrounding Lake Matoaka and College Woods. Although the school is rich with history, it’s very much a school for today. Named one of Intel’s 50 “Most Unwired College Campuses” for its campus-wide wireless network, W&M is a cutting-edge research university that offers hands-on research opportunities as early as freshman year.

Modern-day alumni include actress Glenn Close and fashion designer Perry Ellis.
