Texas Tech University is a public, coeducational research university in Lubbock, Texas. Established in 1923, it is the leading institution of the Texas Tech University System; has the seventh-largest student body in the state of Texas; and is the only campus in Texas that is home to a major university, law school and medical school. Texas Tech University students come from every county in Texas, all 50 states and more than 90 foreign countries.
The school, most often called Texas Tech, offers 100 masters degree programs and over 50 doctoral degree programs in more than 150 courses of study through 13 colleges. The school is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having “high research activity;” hosts 60 research centers and institutes; and oversees projects in the areas of epidemiology, pulsed power, grid computing, nanophotonics, and wind energy.
The university’s 1,839-acre, Spanish Renaissance-themed campus makes Texas Tech University the second-largest contiguous campus in the nation. The campus has won the Grand Award for excellence in grounds-keeping; the school’s art collection has been noted as among the 10 best in the country.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are members of the Big 12 Conference and compete in Division I for all varsity sports. The Red Raiders football team has made 33 bowl appearances; the men’s basketball team has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament. Students known as “Saddle Tramps” carry Bangin Bertha, a bell on a trailer, to all home football games and homecoming events.
Notable alumni include singer John Denver and WellPoint president and CEO Angela Braly, ranked by Fortune magazine as the most powerful woman in business.
