About two miles from downtown Providence, the private Catholic university, Providence College, is located on 105 acres in an area known as Smith Hill. Providence College was founded in 1917 and is a top-rated, selective university with 49 majors and 34 minors.

The Providence Friars participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Big East Conference. There are 19 varsity teams, including basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer. The basketball team plays at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The school colors are black, white, and silver.
