Carnegie Mellon University - Pittsburgh, PA

Trivia question: to get a degree in bagpipes, what university should one attend? Answer: Carnegie Mellon University, one of the few in the nation to offer such a degree. Many of the school’s traditions reflect the heritage of its founder, philanthropist and steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. The university’s Pipe Band features Scottish bagpipes and performs at formal university events; the Kiltie Band, in full Scottish regalia, has performed during every home football game since November 25, 1922, Carnegie’s birthday.

Carnegie Mellon University, also known as CMU, is a private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school was founded in 1900, the university’s 140-acre main campus is three miles from downtown Pittsburgh, adjacent to the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

Carnegie Mellon University, with more than 11,000 students, is a global research university with a strong focus on finding practical answers to complex problems. For instance, top faculty at CMU, working with the University of Pittsburgh, have become leaders in the development of neural prosthetics for the injured or paralyzed. In simple terms, that means by thinking about moving a robotic arm a patient can produce the movement. Once science fiction, neural prosthetics are becoming a reality through research conducted by CMU.

A large number of Carnegie Mellon alumni have had success in the entertainment industry, including Academy Award winner Holly Hunter; actors George Peppard, Jack Klugman, Robert Cummings, Ted Danson and Blair Underwood; and actresses Carol Channing and Mariette Hartley.
