Oregon State University - Corvallis, OR

Oregon State University, or OSU, is a coeducational, public research university founded in 1868. The university is located on 400 acres in the heart of the Willamette Valley in Corvallis, a college town with a current population of 53,000. Corvallis is nicknamed “America’s most innovative city.” It consistently ranks among the country’s safest places to live and among the most environmentally responsible; the school’s 22 exercise machines at Dixon Recreation Center are connected to the grid to help produce power.

OSU is one of only two universities in the nation to have Sea Grant, Space Grant and Sun Grant designations. The school is also the only university in the Oregon to hold both the Carnegie Foundation’s top designation for research institutions and its prestigious “Community Engagement” classification.

With an enrollment of 24,000 students, the university offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in more than 200 academic programs including nationally-recognized nuclear engineering, biochemistry and oceanography programs, as well as a multitude of research opportunities.

Because OSU is Oregon’s largest public research university, research plays a central role. The school receives more research funding than all other public institutions in the state — a combined $261.7 million in 2011, a year in which other universities experienced declines. The school earned a licensing royalty income of more than $4 million for fiscal year 2011.

Notable alumni include Linus Pauling, the only person ever to win two unshared Nobel Prizes; Jodi Ann Paterson, 2000 Playboy Playmate of the Year; and Katherine Ann Power, anti-war activist convicted of armed robbery and manslaughter with 14 years on the FBI “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list.
