University of Akron - Akron, OH
The University of Akron, a coeducational public research university, is a vibrant community within metropolitan Akron with more than 80 buildings on 218 acres. The school continues to grow, with nine of its buildings as well as 34 acres of new green space added since 2000.
The school enrolls more than 29,000 students from 46 states and 80 foreign countries, making the University of Akrkon the third-largest university in Ohio, as well as creating a student population which is culturally diverse and from a broad economic spectrum.
The university was founded in 1870 as a small college affiliated with the Universalist Church; ownership was transferred to the City of Akron in 1913. The school is regarded as a world leader in polymer research, and its curriculum focuses on industries such as polymers, advanced materials and engineering. A 2007 report affiliated with the National Science Foundation ranked the University of Akron as one of 10 exemplary schools for technology transfer, commercialization and industry partnership.
The university’s Archives of the History of American Psychology, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is located on the school campus and contains some of the nation’s most famous psychology artifacts that draw an audience of researchers from around the world.
The University of Akron offers two branch campuses, Wayne College and the Medina County University Center. In addition, the school hosts various nursing programs in conjunction with Lorain County Community College under the University Partnership program.
US News and World Report ranked the University of Akron as 127 out of 143 in its Best Law Schools for 2011.
