Appalachian State University - Boone, NC

Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwestern North Carolina, Boone is a charming mountain town with a historic downtown filled with shops and restaurants. The town incorporated in 1872 and is named for explorer and pioneer Daniel Boone. It is a picture-perfect setting for Appalachian State University, North Carolina’s sixth largest school in its university system.

ASU was established in 1899 and is a highly respected university with 103 undergraduate and 49 graduate programs. Its rural campus is located on 1,300 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, making it one of the highest-elevated campuses east of the Mississippi River. The university’s location gives students the opportunity to enjoy several mountain-based activities, including rock climbing, hiking, rafting, fishing, camping, skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers compete in NCAA Division I and are part of the Southern conference. The football team plays at Kidd Brewer Stadium, sometimes called “The Rock.” The Mountaineers won three straight national championships in 2005, 2006, and 2007, making them the first FCS team to do so.
