University of New Mexico - Albuquerque, NM
The University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, or UNM, is a public research university located just east of downtown Albuquerque. It is New Mexico’s flagship research institution and enjoys the state’s largest post-secondary enrollment, with a total of almost 35,000 full-time students and another 12,000 non-traditional students attending at night.
Founded in 1889, UNM rests on 600 acres along old Route 66, incorporating the magnificent mesas to the west, past the banks of the historic Rio Grande and the Sandia Mountains to the east. The school also offers branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Taos and Valencia County.
The University of New Mexico is known for its distinctive Pueblo Revival architectural theme that echoes the structures in nearby Pueblo Indian villages. There are eight university buildings listed separately on the National Register of Historic Places.
The university offers more than 210 degree and certificate programs, including 94 undergraduate and 74 graduate degrees, and 40 doctoral programs. UNM boasts an outstanding faculty that includes a Nobel Laureate, two MacArthur Fellows and 35 Fulbright scholars.
The main campus is divided into central, north, and south. The central campus is home to the main academic university and the New Mexico Arboretum. The North Campus includes the medical and law schools and the University of New Mexico Hospital.
Notable alumni include presidential candidate and former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson, and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and the eldest of Robert F. Kennedy’s children.
