Oakland University is situated in the cities of Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills, both considered extreme northern suburbs of Detroit. OU is a major research university that was established in 1957. The school is home to a medical school that was established in 2011. OU offers a total of 132 undergraduate programs and 124 graduate programs, including more than a dozen doctoral degrees.
Meadow Brook Hall, a National Historic Landmark, was built around 1926 and is a Tudor mansion that resembles a castle. It is an 88,000-square-foot mansion with 110 rooms. It was built by Matilda Dodge Wilson and her second husband, Alfred G. Wilson. Matilda was the widow of John Francis Dodge, a pioneer in the auto industry. The impressive historic house is the third largest house museum in the country.
