Michigan’s third-largest university is Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. CMU offers about 200 academic programs, from undergraduate to doctoral. CMU is situated along the southern end of Mount Pleasant, adjacent to the Chippewa River. Even though it is one of the nation’s largest universities, it is still growing – the College of Medicine opened in 2013.
CMU has several highly-regarded programs, including its fashion program, which is considered one of the nation’s best. CMU students in the fashion program have the opportunity to study abroad in such powerhouse fashion cities as Milan, London, Florence, and Hong Kong. CMU’s fashion program is also the only one in Michigan to house a body scanner and environmental chamber to test custom clothing in a climate-controlled environment.
Established in 1892, CMU enrolls about 28,000 students per year. The CMU Chippewas (or Chips) participate in NCAA Division I and the school colors are maroon and gold. They have 16 varsity teams, including basketball, baseball, and football. The CMU football program is a top 25 Division I FBS program. Many CMU football players end up in the NFL, including the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Antonio Brown, the Indianapolis Colts’ Josh Gordy, the San Francisco 49ers’ Joe Staley, and the Kansas City Chief’s Frank Zombo.

This popular location is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, theaters, taverns, pubs, and parks. It is also the location of several festivals and special events, including an annual arts and crafts festival.
