Towson University, often referred to as simply Towson, is a public university located in the city of Towson in Baltimore County, and the second-largest public university in Maryland with an enrollment of 20,000 students.
Founded in 1866, Towson was originally a training school for teachers, and still produces the highest number of teachers of any school in the state. Today Towson has evolved into a four-year, degree-granting institution, recognized for its excellent programs in the arts and sciences, communications and business. The university provides 64 undergraduate majors, 37 graduate degree programs and four doctoral programs. Towson offers one of the nation’s only 100 gerontology undergraduate programs, and its only undergraduate degree in e-Business.
US News and World Report ranked Towson University eighth in its category in “Best Colleges.” Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has named Towson University one of the “top 100 best values in public colleges.”
Located eight miles north of Baltimore, the school’s 328-acre landscaped setting offers a suburban environment for study, as well as easy access to the downtown area. The campus is approximately an hour north of Washington, DC, and four hours south of New York City. Baltimore Washington International Airport is 45 minutes south of Towson, and train service is available via Amtrak 20 minutes south of campus.
Notable alumni include Kevin Clash, the voice of Sesame Street’s Elmo; actor Dwight Schultz, who played Captain “Howling Mad” Murdock on The A-Team and Lieutenant Reginald Barclay in Star Trek: The Next Generation; John Schuerholz, Atlanta Braves General Manager; and Sheila Dixon, former and first black woman Mayor of Baltimore, convicted of embezzlement.
