Ball State University is a state-run research institution located in Muncie, Indiana. The university campus spans 731 acres and has an enrollment of more than 22,000 students.
Ball State is classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a research university with “high research activity,” placing it in the company of Boston College, Clemson University, and College of William and Mary. Other accolades include a US News and World Report ranking of eighth among “up-and-coming” colleges and universities, recognition as one of the ”best universities in the Midwest” by the Princeton Review , and ranking by the same publication as one of the “best values among the nation’s most academically-outstanding colleges.”
Ball State offers approximately 180 undergraduate and 100 graduate degree programs. More than 90 percent of the university’s classes are taught by professors, which is rare at an institution of Ball State’s size.
The commercial district adjacent to campus, known as “The Village,” plays an integral part in campus life, and has existed in its present location since the 1920s. Most evenings Mark Carter, known as “the hot dog man,” sells his “nearly world famous” hot dogs to patrons of the village bars. Carter was ranked 51 in Sports Illustrated’s “The 100 Things You Gotta Do Before You Graduate” list.
Established in 1972, Ball State’s oldest international program is the London Center. Approximately 30 full-time students, living in the heart of London and studying under British and American professors, choose courses from an accredited catalog and enjoy weekly day trips to a number of British locales.
