Founded in 1899, WIU started out as a small teachers’ college. Today, if offers several degree programs in four academic colleges. Other academic departments include Health Sciences, Biological Studies, Art, History, Chemistry, Kinesiology, and Communication. WIU consists of 41 academic departments.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks play in NCAA Division I. The football team is a member of the Division I FCS Missouri Valley Football Conference. The football team plays at Hanson Field, while the basketball team plays at Western Hall. The Leathernecks have 16 varsity teams. Their mascot is the English bulldog and school colors are purple and gold.
