University of Chicago - Chicago, IL
Crescat scientia; vita excolatur is the motto of the University of Chicago, or in English, “Let knowledge grow from more to more; and so be human life enriched.” The university strives to live up to its motto, unearthing information that allows research to improve our lives. It was at the University of Chicago that REM sleep was discovered; the university executed the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction; and the nation’s first living-donor liver transplant was performed here.
The University of Chicago is a private research university, founded by the American Baptist Education Society with a donation from oil magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller. The school’s first classes were held in 1892. It has a reputation of devotion to academic scholarship, and is affiliated with scores of Rhodes Scholars and 85 Nobel Prize laureates. The school is considered an “Ivy Plus” institution, meaning it competes academically with Ivy League universities.
Eighty-five recipients of the Nobel Prize have been students, researchers, or faculty at University of Chicago. The school’s creative writers and scholars have recently won the Pulitzer prize, the National Medal of Science, the Grammy award, and the MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant.
Located in the community of Hyde Park on Chicago’s South Side, just 15 minutes from the city center on Lake Michigan, the University of Chicago’s architecture is a blend of traditional English Gothic and award-winning modern buildings designed by renowned architects. The University consists of the College of the University of Chicago, a number of graduate programs, six professional schools and a school of continuing education. The University enrolls approximately 5,000 students in the college and about 15,000 students overall.
