Beautiful and historic, the campus of Mercer University is considered one of the most picturesque in the nation. Mercer was established in 1833 and is a large, private university. Mercer offers 11 fields of study, including music, engineering, liberal arts, business, education, medicine, law theology, pharmacy, nursing, and health.
Mercer University’s main campus is located in Macon. It also offers the Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Education campus in Atlanta and a School of Medicine in Savannah. Mercer enrolls approximately 5,500 undergraduate students.
The Grand Opera House, located in downtown Macon, is Mercer’s Performing Arts Center. The building, built in 1884, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The theater has seen several historically significant performances, including actor Charlie Chaplin leading the John Philip Sousa band during a fundraiser. Bob Hope, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore, Will Rogers, and Harry Houdini also performed at the theater.
Mercer University is located directly off I-75 between Coleman Avenue and Mercer University Drive. To find an apartment in the Mercer University area, look on Macon’s southwest side, particularly along 2nd Street, Telfair Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
